The exhibition of vessel models
“CONCUERORS OF THE SEAS”

October, 29, 2005 – January, 29, 2006

Since the Early Middle Ages the Neva river together with many feeders and branches have become a part of the most important international navigable waterways “from the Varangians to the Greeks”. All who are fond of history know that Peter the Great saw not only a deserted coast but city Nyen and fortress Nyenscans located at the place where the Okhta river is running at present ( Krasnogvardeisky district of St.-Petersburg). A lot of Nyen citezens were shipowners in 1809 already. Peter the Great contributed to shipbuilding development. In 1809 tsar Alexander I decreed the foundation of a model workshop located at the Okhtinskaya shipyard which was to produce vessels for the “Sea Museum”.

A new exhibition of the Museum “700 Years - Landskrona, Nevskoye Ustye, Nyenskans” (2, Krasnogvardeiskaya square, Askold Business Centre) brings back to life glorious shipbuilding past and present of Russia, Sweden and other maritime nations. The Museum is among the youngest and most dynamically developing St.-Petersburg museums. Its exhibitions show the prehistory of our city, and the museum is situated at the very place where St-Petersburg came from, where the Nyenscans fortress was founded.

The new exhibition gives a unique opportunity for all who are interested in the history of world shipbuiding to see models of ancient sailing ships and modern armed vessels, submarines, etc. All of them are exact copies of real ships made by amatuers and profesionals of the modern vessel modelling. Some models gained prizes on the Ship Modelling Championships.

Las year Museum “700 Years - Landskrona, Nevskoye Ustye, Nyenskans” already held a similar exhibition which was much spoken about. The Okhta Group company, one of the Museum initiators, helped to turn the model exhibition into a traditional one. Due to Okhta Group a small museum in Askold Business Centre has become a cultural centre of St.-Petersburg this year.

As usual, openning of the exhibition is going to be a real show. We hope to see here our constant guests - officials of the authorities of St.Petersburg and Krasnogvardeisky district, representatives of the Consulates of Sweden, Germany and other countries, scientists, artists and musicians…

Dear friends, you are welcome, we are glad to see you again!

Initiators of the exhibition:

- Sophia Kasym, director of the Museum “700 Years - Landskrona, Nevskoye Ustye, Nyenskans”
- A.A. Dobrenko, Judge of republic category, founder of the Ship modelling Guild of St.-Petersburg
