Izhora Antiquities
From April 12 to May 31 the Museum “700 Years - Landskrona, Nevskoye
Ustye, Nyenskans” holds the exhibition “Izhora ancientries” to show
unique archeological finds of the Petersburg archeological expedition
during excavations in 2005. As compared to the other Finnish tribes
living in the north-west, Izhora has not been thoroughly studied. Just a
few references in the written documents together with some accidental
finds could give an idea of this town.
Researchers found one of the most intresting burial memorial of the
Finno-Ugric tribe izhora (ingra). Burial grounds at the very surface
didn’t survive. However, within fencings there were lots of finds dated
to the XII-XIIIth centuries. They help to describe culture and life of
medieval Izhora. Swords and various ornaments prove wealth of these
people. One can see burial grounds for both men and women. And, judgying
by funeral cereminies they were not Christians at that time.
Museum “700 Years - Landskrona, Nevskoye Ustye, Nyenskans” is going to be the first to show these unique finds to the public.
